Cold damp dawn, rising sun,
artillery drawn, lying in the mud/
Bold men gone, dying young,
military sons, and their names live on/
Morning dew gleams down on the fallen
breeze blows through the stench of the rotting/
Devouring thoughts rage, all are sodden,
knees and elbows in the trenches crawling/

When you stare in the abyss,
all day long until the sky turns black,
If you stare long enough,
into the abyss, the abyss stares back/

Move with allies push them in a bend,
Concave, sought to eliminate/
Intensive bombardment, releasing poison gas,
Dropping like flies, hold the line and fight back/

When you gaze in the abyss,
All night long until the sky turns blue,
For when you gaze long into,
The Abyss, gazes also into you/

THE ABYSS

All through the night, fought to close the gap,
Yellow-green clouds of chlorine/
Enemies launch more gas, another poison attack,
Two days pass, six thou on their backs

When you stare in the abyss,

If you stare long enough,
into the abyss, the abyss stares back/

Campaign launched relieving pressure from the forces,
Beleaguered casualties exceeded/
Major offensive on, extreme left of the assault,
Finally secured, our division in exalt/
